While recognizing the current realities of regulatory policies and programs, we seek to develop a vision and practical steps for implementation on the local, regional and state levels to reduce global warming and climate change impacts of human land use activities, while enhancing the quality of life and efficiency of the built environment and its contribution to a sustainable future. All ideas from whatever source are welcome. Respectful and courteous response to the contributions of others is expected. Emphasis should be on measures that are or could some day be practical, efficient, and that recognize a broad range of public policy objectives and needs. An understanding of the current land use regulatory system (if it can be called a system) that currently emphasizes local control (cities and counties), focused resource protection agencies (air, water, flood control, fire, forestry, natural resources, agriculture, mining, etc.), industry or environmental advocacy and weak or non-existent regional or state coordination or prioritization. Vision of a possible better future and commitment to the collaborative, multidisciplinary effort needed to make it happen are prerequisites for participation.
The mandate for the California Air Resources Board (and not EPA or OPR) to take the lead on developing California's response to global warming means that land use professionals need to get involved. This is one place for them to do that in a positive and constructive forum. Cynics and nay-sayers, critics without ideas for a better way forward are not wanted. Group Tags
